SABOTAGE PONT DE GAUTHARD

BOUISSET doit engager une action sur la ligne SNCF CASTRES-BEDARIEUX.
Le pont de GAUTHARD, sur le Thoré
d’accès facile, est choisi comme cible.

Dans la nuit du Lundi au
mardi 15 août 1944, après avoir neutralisé les 2 hommes de garde
sur le pont, Le Commando Américain assisté du peloton WEIL, du Corps
Franc du Sidobre, fait sauter l'arche centrale du pont de la voie ferrée,
coupant ainsi aux troupes allemandes toute possibilité de repli en train par
la voie méditerranéenne. |
Dans les heures qui suivent, les
forces françaises de la 1er Armée débarquent en Provence à FREJUS.
Le pont de GAUTHARD a été construit en 1887 par les chemins de fer du Midi . L’exploitation de la ligne SNCF CASTRES-BEDARIEUX a cessé en 1987. Depuis 1994 ce pont est la propriété de la Commune du BOUT DU PONT DE L’ARN.
Pont de GAUTHARD – 15 August 44
Captain LAGUEUX, Platoon Leader of the US unit, was in daily radio contact with the Allied command in Algiers. Captain LAGUEUX was instructed to deploy his unit, camped at the farm SAN FÉ near BOUISSET, to undertake action against the railroad line CASTRES/BEDARIEUX. The railroad bridge over the river Thoré at GAUTHARD was chosen as an easily accessible target.
During the night from Monday to Tuesday 15 Aug 44, after neutralizing two guards on the bridge, the US unit assisted by the squad WEIL of the CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE blew up the central arch of the bridge using 60 Kgs of plastic explosive. This action cut off the possibility for the Germans to withdraw by train using the Mediterranean route.
In the following hours the French forces of the 1st Army landed in Provence at FREJUS. The GOTHARD bridge was built in 1887 by the Railways of the South. SNCF service ceased on the CASTRES/BEDARIEUX line in 1987. Since 1994 this bridge has been owned by the City of BOUT DU PONT DE L’ARN.
