CAMIONNETTE
INCENDIEE - STELE DE MONTLEDIER
Le mardi 15 Août 1944, en début de matinée, une
camionnette quitte DURENQUE vers BOISSEZON par la D68/93. Sur le plateau
plusieurs bidons vides avec 4 hommes et en cabine le chauffeur avec le chef de
convoi, destination l’usine de peinture DUCO à SAIX, près de CASTRES pour
prélever discrètement, un jour férié, avec l’accord du Directeur Mr.LAUDA, du
« diluant avec additif « .
Le plein est fait et le trajet CASTRES-MAZAMET se déroule sans problème. Le
retour par la RICHARDE a été décidé pour récupérer Emile BONNET, agent de
liaison du Cdt HUGUES dont le PC est alors installé à SALAVERT ( maison
forestière). En fin de matinée Charles BALFET, le métayer de la ferme de MONTLEDIER monte par
la D54 avec son mulet et sa charrette chargée de bidons de lait qu’il vient de
livrer à MAZAMET. Il entend une violente fusillade. En arrivant près du virage,
situé avant le cimetière actuel, il aperçoit sur le coté gauche un véhicule en
feu. Il attend un peu et s’approche. Il voit alors plusieurs corps sur la route
qui brûlent.

apprit par la suite que les allemands, très nerveux après les attaques du
Maquis au RIALET le 12 Août et à VENTENAC le 14 Août, voulaient protéger les
convois qui continuaient d’évacuer le dépôt du VINTROU. Ils ont ce jour-là
interdit toute circulation automobile sur la D54. Lorsqu’un de leurs camions
chargé de matériel équipé d’un fusil-mitrailleur sur le toit de la cabine et
descendant la route en direction de MAZAMET, rencontre dans un virage un
véhicule suspect, une rafale d’arme automatique cloue sur place les occupants.
Les 7 maquisards sont tués sans aucune riposte possible et leur camionnette
s’enflamme .
Charles BALFET attend que les flammes
diminuent et aidé d’un habitant du PONT DE L’ARN accouru au bruit de la
fusillade, sort tous les corps restés dans la camionnette pour les allonger sur
la route. Il récupère, pour sa famille, la chevalière d’Emile BONNET dont il a
reconnu le corps. Les malheureux maquisards seront inhumés au cimetière du PONT
DE L’ARN.
Participaient à cette corvée de carburant du CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE : Geo FEYDEVIELLE, Lieutenant chef de convoi, Paulo AYNES, Sergent, Marcel MILLET, Lucien MONTAGNE, Maurice DUPUIS, François GASCUEL. Le passager supplémentaire Emile BONNET, périt avec ses camarades.
Stèle de MONTLEDIER - 15 August 1944
On Tuesday, 15 Aug 44, a small van left DURENQUE in the early morning bound for BOISSEZON via the D68/93. In the bed of the van were empty cans and 4 men. In the front were the driver and the leader of the transfer duty. The destination was the paint factory DUCO at Saïx, near Castres, to remove discreetly on that public holiday, with the agreement of the director M. LAUDA, some “paint thinner with additive.
”
The cans were filled, and the ride from Castres to Mazamet was without any problem. The return was via RICHARDE to pick up Emile BONNET, liaison agent of Commandant HUGUES, whose PC was at that time at SALAVERT (a cabin in the woods). At the end of the morning Charles BALFET the farmer of the sharecropper farm at MONTLEDIER was going up the D54 with his mule and cart loaded with milk cans from the milk he had just delivered at MAZAMET. He heard a violent discharge of firearms. At the curve before the resent-day cemetery he saw to the left a vehicle on fire. He waited a moment then approached. He saw several bodies burning on the road.
Charles BALFET learned afterward that the Germans, very nervous after the attacks by the Maquis at LE RIALET 12 Aug and at VENTENAC 14 Aug, wanted to protect the convoys which were continuing to evacuate the depot of VINTROU. They had stopped all automobile traffic on the D54. One of their lorries, loaded with equipment and fitted with a machine gun on the roof of the cabin, was coming down the road toward MAZAMET. In a curve it had met the suspicious vehicle, fired at it with automatic weapons and hit all of its occupants. The 7 Maquis had been killed without any chance to return fire, and their van had burst into flame.
Charles BALFET waited until the flames died down, then, helped by a resident of PONT DE L’ARN who had come running when he heard the gunfire, pulled the remaining bodies from the van to lay them on the road. He recovered the signet ring from Emile BONNET, whose body he recognized, for his family. The Maquis victims were buried in the cemetery of PONT DE L’ARN.
Participating in this fuel-transfer duty of the CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE were: Geo FEYDEVIELLE, Lieutenant and leader of the convoy; Paulo AYNES, Sergeant; Marcel MILLET; Lucien MONTAGNE; Maurice DUPUIS; François GASCUEL. The extra passenger, Emile BONNET, perished with his comrades.
