Le samedi 12 août 1944, en début
d’après-midi, 3 side-cars allemands, dont au moins un avec un fusil
mitrailleur, venant du RIALET, descendent de la D53 vers PONT DE L’ARN. Ils
évacuent un blessé par balles, suite à l’escarmouche du matin avec le CORPS
FRANC DU SIDOBRE.

Arrivés
dans un virage près de la ferme de BETGES, les 3 side-cars se trouvent nez à
nez avec le commando U.S qui rentre à pied au BOUISSET, l’arme à la bretelle.
Une intense fusillade
s’engage. Le bilan est lourd. Côté américain 2 tués : Le sergent Bernard
GAUTIER et le T/5 Robert SPAUR ; Côté allemand 1 tué et un blessé grave, le
gradé. Les 3 side-cars font demi-tour et remontent au RIALET. Du café HOULES
ils téléphonent à la Kommandantur pour demander du renfort. Sur ordre du capitaine LAGUEUX,
les corps des 2 soldats U.S tués ne seront récupérés que le surlendemain. Il
fallait que l’on sache que les Américains étaient là, en appui du Maquis. |
En fin d’après-midi un
détachement allemand, renforcé avec 3 chenillettes, arrivera au RIALET.
Mademoiselle MALCUIT, professeur d’allemand servira d’interprète et insistera
sur l’assistance apportée par les habitants au blessé du matin, calmant ainsi
la colère des officiers allemands décidés à incendier LE RIALET. A la nuit tombante
toutes les troupes allemandes prenaient la route de PONT DE L’ARN.

On Saturday 12 Aug 44 in the early afternoon, 3 German motorcycles with sidecars, at least one of which was carrying a machine gun, were coming from LE RIALET going down the D53 toward PONT DE L’ARN. They were evacuating a person wounded by gunfire that morning in the skirmish with the CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE. As they reached a curve near the farm at BETGES, the 3 sidecar motorcycles came face to face with a US patrol returning to BOUISSET. The US patrol were on foot, their weapons at sling arms.
An intense exchange of fire took place, the outcome being several casualties. On the American side, 2 killed: Sergeant Bernard GAUTIER and T/5 Robert SPAUR. On the German side, one dead and one, the officer, seriously wounded. The 3 sidecar motorcycles turned around and returned to LE RIALET. At the café HOULES they telephoned their command center to ask for reinforcement.
On the order of Captain LAGUEUX, the bodies of the 2 American soldiers killed were not recovered until 2 days later. The purpose of this delay was to show that Americans had come to help the Maquis.
At the end of the afternoon a German detachment, reinforced with 3 tracked vehicles, arrived at LE RIALET. Melle Henriette MALCUIT, a local teacher of German, served as interpreter and insisted that the local inhabitants bring assistance for the men wounded that morning. This calmed the anger of the German officers who had decided to burn LE RIALET. By nightfall all of the German troops had left for PONT DE L’ARN.
