L’évolution de la campagne de France, favorable aux Alliés, pousse le commandement des F.F.I à intensifier le harcèlement des troupes d’occupation.

Le samedi 12 août 1944, dans la matinée, venant de la ferme LAGRANGE,

2 pelotons du CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE convergent vers le village du RIALET où stationne un groupe d’allemands occupés à rassembler dans un pré le bétail de la ferme de SAGNE PLAGNE incendiée la veille. Ils ont réquisitionné des paysans pour traire les vaches. L’attaque surprise avec un effectif très supérieur en nombre cause la panique chez les Allemands qui s’enfuient laissant un blessé caché derrière un mur et une vache tuée.

L'Adjudant VENCLIC et 2 Hommes "fouillent" l'intérieur de l'Eglise pour voir s'il n'y a pas d'ennemi caché.

Après le repli du Maquis, le blessé Allemand sera soigné par monsieur HOULES du café Houlès, monsieur PROM secrétaire de mairie et monsieur MARAVAL du CATIE avec le concours de mademoiselle MALCUIT , professeur d’allemand. Elle réussira à lui faire réciter le « Notre- Père » pour le calmer. Monsieur HOULES téléphonera ensuite à la Kommandantur de MAZAMET pour faire évacuer le blessé.

En début d’après-midi, arrivent 3 side-cars allemands avec un infirmier et un gradé pour évacuer le blessé. Après une nouvelle intervention de mademoiselle MALCUIT qui explique les évènements du matin avec le maquis « qui est partout », les 3 side-cars repartent vers PONT DE L’ARN. Ce retour par le D53 aura des conséquences tragiques pour les Américains. (voir COMMANDO U.S ( 2 TUES )- BETGES ).

Au même moment dans les bois de LAGRANGE un triste accident va se produire. Une fausse manœuvre dans le maniement d’un pistolet 9m/m (PARABELLUM) récupéré le matin au RIALET, blessera au cou Paul COMBES (alias CHICANEAU). Il sera évacué sur CAMBOUNES.

Le docteur Louis CABROL d’ANGLES appelé pour soigner le maquisard, ne pourra que constater son décès. Appelé ensuite par monsieur HOULES au RIALET, il fera une piqûre au jeune allemand blessé.

The evolution of the campaign in France, becoming more favorable for the Allies, encouraged the FFI Command to intensify the harassment of the occupation troops.

On the morning of Saturday 12 Aug 44 two platoons of the CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE converged on the village of LE RIALET where a group of Germans were assembling in a pasture of the farm SAGNE PLAGNE, which had been burned the day before. The Germans had asked the farmers to milk the cows. The surprise attack by the greater force of the CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE caused panic among the Germans, who fled leaving one wounded person hidden behind a wall and one dead cow.

The Assistant chief VENCLIC and two men searched the interior of the church to see whether any enemy were hiding there. After the withdrawal of the Maquis the injured German was cared for at the Café Houlès by four people: M. HOULES, M. PROM (town clerk), M. MARAVAL du CATIE, and Mlle. Henriette MALCUIT (teacher of German). Mlle. MALCUIT succeeded in calming the wounded man by having him recite the Lord’s Prayer. M. HOULES then telephoned the command center at MAZAMET to have the wounded man evacuated.

At the beginning of the afternoon, three German side-car motorcycles arrived with a nurse and an officer to evacuate the wounded man. Mlle. MALCUIT explained to them what had happened that morning with the Maquis, pointing out that the Maquis were “everywhere.” The three side-car motorcycles then left, bound for PONT DE L’ARN. This return on the D53 had tragic consequences for the Americans. (See section 2 ”Stèle BETGES” regarding the 2 killed of the US unit)

At the same time in the woods at LAGRANGE a very unfortunate accident happened. Paul COMBES (alias CHICANEAU) was wounded in the neck by an accidental mishandling of a 9-mm pistol (PARABELLUM) recovered that morning at LE RIALET. He was evacuated to CAMBOUNES.

Dr. Louis CABROL of ANGLES was called to treat the Maquis, but the doctor could only confirm his death. Dr. CABROL was then called by M. HOULES to come to LE RIALET where he gave an injection to the young wounded German.
