Récits d’après un Mazamétain
(BOURGUIGNON) :
Le mardi 22 août 1944, une
colonne allemande de plus de 300 hommes, venant de CARCASSONNE, se présente
vers 12 heures à TIREVENT, avec l’intention de traverser MAZAMET.
LE CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE, arrivé
en début d’après-midi, bloque rapidement les principales rues de la ville.Des
coups de feu à l’arme automatique sont échangés et les murs de quelques maisons
de la rue Barbey sont touchés par les éclats (encore à ce jour visibles). Les
maquisards bien qu’inférieurs en nombre, manœuvrent habilement et tendent un
piège à l’ennemi, en faisant déplacer dans les rues de la ville, un engin
chenillé qui donne qui donne aux officiers allemands l’impression d’une
résistance bien organisée. Après quelques palabres les soldats ennemis
acceptent de se rendre.
C’est dans un rang parfait par
trois que 385 officiers et hommes de troupe rendent dignement leurs armes
sur le stade de la Chevallière devant les maquisards du CORPS FRANC DU SIDOBRE
alignés face à eux. Le Capitaine Allemand s'adresse à ses hommes et prononce
ces paroles :
"Il nous est impossible d'aller
plus loin, je crois faire mon devoir en vous gardant vivants pour la Patrie.
L'Allemagne traverse en ce moment une phase pénible de la guerre, mais soyez
tranquilles elle en viendra à bout. Avant de nous séparer, je vous demande de
saluer une dernière fois celui sur qui repose le destin de l'Allemagne et qui
saura la conduire à la Victoire. Par trois fois les Hommes répondent : HEILL
HITLER".
La population mazamétaine,
très nombreuse sur les lieux, s’emparera dans la cohue de presque tous les
fusils. Les prisonniers seront ensuite enfermés quelques jours dans les locaux
du conditionnement. Un maquisard (Y.C ) sera chargé de ramener vers CASTRES une
trentaine de vélos allemands.
Liberation of Mazamet
Captain LAMON had learned earlier through persons who had contacts with the aide de camp (Captain MÄRZ) to the colonel of the German garrison, that this officer was aware of the following circumstances and wished to enter negotiations with the resistance:

Unreliable elements in their troops, the great majority originating in the Soviet Republics where they were referred to as “Mongols.”
As told by the Mazamet resident BOURGUIGNON
On Tuesday 22 Aug 1944 a German column of more than 300 men coming from Carcassonne appeared around 12h00 noon at Tirevent with the intention to cross Mazamet. The CORPS FRANC du SIDOBRE, arriving at the beginning of the afternoon, quickly blocked the main streets of the town. There was an exchange of fire from automatic weapons and the walls of several houses in the Rue Barbey were hit (marks still visible today). Members of the Maquis, though fewer in number, maneuvered cleverly and set a trap for the enemy. They moved into the streets a tank-like repair vehicle (without a gun turret), which gave the German officers the impression of a well organized resistance. After some discussions the enemy soldiers surrendered.
In perfect formation by threes 385 officers and men advanced and laid down their arms in a dignified manner in the stadium of the Chevalière in front of the Maquis of the CORPS FRANC du SIDOBRE, who were lined up facing them. The German Captain addressed his men with the following words:
“It is impossible to go further; I believe I am doing my duty by keeping you alive for our country. At this time Germany is going through a difficult phase of the war, but be assured she will come out of it still standing. Before parting from each other I request that you salute one last time him on whom rests the destiny of Germany and who can lead her to victory. (The men reply three times Heil Hitler.)”
Many of the people of Mazamet who were gathered there crowded forward and took almost all of the rifles. The prisoners were put into guarded enclosures for several days. One member of the Maquis (Y.C.) was put in charge of transporting about 30 German bicycles to Castres.
